Twilight and New Moon: Starting Off Right

The Twilight movie series started off amazing, with Twilight and New Moon making a huge splash on the big screen.  I don’t think that any of us Twitards would argue that the casting of Bella, Edward, and Jacob was absolutely amazing – and not bad eye candy, either .  Twilight and New Moon had great dialogue and the scenery and supporting cast was rich and full of life.

Everything was fresh and new, and it seemed like the twilight series had a bright future ahead of it.  Sure, there were some critics that panned the movies – but there will always be those types of people who just don’t “get it.”  All in all, the Twilight and New Moon movies of the series made me really excited to see Eclipse and Breaking Dawn…but they quickly let me down with the latter two movies in the series

Pulling a Harry Potter: “Breaking” Dawn Into Two Parts

As the series of twilight movies got more and more popular in mainstream media and more people began to check out the movies and books, the commercialism of the series started to rear its ugly head.  I think that most Harry Potter fans remember the outrage that was felt when they announced that the 7th book would be split into two parts on the big screen.  It was an obvious play to make even more money off of fans, and it worked perfectly because everyone went along with it anyways.  The thing is, Harry Potter actually did a good job with the dual-part ending of their series, while Twilight’s Breaking Dawn left a lot to be desired from fans.

The problem with the Breaking Dawn part of the Twilight series was just that they did it poorly.  There was almost no excitement or action in the movie at all, and most of it actually focused on Edward and Bella simply relaxing on their honeymoon.  While I know that the book was mostly about this too, there were a lot of parts that seemed to be missing that would have made the movie a whole lot better.

The way that they interacted on the big screen in Breaking Dawn was just SO different than the way they interacted in the book.  In the first two movies in the Twilight series they actually had real affection and caring for each other, and it seemed contrived and fake in this last movie.  Who knows, that could just be my opinion but I’d like to think it’s accurate because I consider myself one of the biggest Twitards that has ever existed :p.

Twilight Team Edward

Twitards on the side of the sullen vampire have a lot going for them.  For one, Edward is the man that Bella actually ends up with, and does so rather quickly.  There’s just something about him that Bella finds impossibly enchanting, even more so than the hotblooded and hardbodied Jacob.

Edward has a few things going for him that Jacob sadly lacks.  For one he’s actually inhuman, a fantastical being with powers beyond comprehension.  In the past, vampires were portrayed as evil beings who were only out for blood, but Stephenie Meyer decided to take a different spin on things and create a character that COULD kill and hurt, but consciously decided not to.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he is absolutely gorgeous and has hair that would make any man jealous and any woman swoon.  He is the perfect embodiment of the strong, silent type that all of us twitards go crazy over…especially when they look like Robert Pattinson.

Twilight Team Jacob

It’s safe to say that Team Jacob has fewer numbers, but these twitards are much more vocal about their support of the lovable werewolf.  For one, Jacob is impossibly human in a way that most of us can never understand.  He’s in touch with his animalistic side in a VERY real way, and this manliness and agressiveness is something that attracts us in a way that we can’t quite explain.

His fanatical devotion to Bella, even when it’s not in his best interest, reminds us of the men that we wish we had in our lives.  Jacob would go to the ends of the Earth to protect her, and he’d look sexy doing it.  Taylor Lautner’s transformation from Twilight to New Moon is one that would make even straight men question their sexuality, as his body is as beautiful as any late-teen’s could be.

Twilight’s Edward and Jacob are going to remain some of the series’ most enigmatic characters, and the reasons for their fan appeal will stay as diverse and divided as ever.  But that’s a good thing.  Without these heated debates of the sexiness, abilities, or attractiveness of these characters it’s safe to say the Twilight Saga wouldn’t be as interesting as it is.  So whoever you choose, know that your answer isn’t wrong – it’s just that there is an entire army of Twitards on the other side who would disagree!
